  3. David Dodd, author of The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead lyrics looked into the possibility that this song is about a string band called the New Lost City Ramblers (NLCR), whose John Cohen was nicknamed "Uncle John." Dodd started a discussion on the topic, and Robert Hunter weighed in, lending support to the niipropkingbemetothefiloroluking.coinfo's wrote: I like the direction of the discussion on UJB.
  4. John Phillips from The Mamas & The Papas wrote this song. In the liner notes to his solo album Phillips 66 (where his version of the song appears), it states: "John often used to tell the story behind 'Me And My Uncle.' Years ago he began receiving publishing royalties from a song on a Judy Collins record with which he was unfamiliar.
  5. In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold, And we high-tailed it down to Mexico. I love those cowboys, I love their gold, I loved my uncle, God rest his soul, Taught me good, Lord, Taught me all I know Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

  7. General CommentMy personal opinion about this song is as a kind of protest about the Vietnam war (which was, unless I am very much mistaken, well underway at the time of this song's writing). The Dead's manager at this time was named John, and his nickname was 'Uncle John', so Uncle John's Band probably means the Dead themselves.
